Johnny Grant, the man known as the “honorary mayor of Hollywood”, was found dead in his Roosevelt Hotel penthouse suite in Los Angeles, the police reported on Thursday. The 84- year- old man, who was given the honorary position in 1980 for his devotion to promoting the home of the movie industry, seems to have died of natural causes, the police said.Grant used to be the organizer of the Hollywood Christmas Parade and to manage the Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremonies, while he was a good friend of the stars."There will never be anyone who loved Hollywood as much as he," actress Angie Dickinson told local TV station KCAL. Even though Hollywood is not officially a city, Grant took its mayor name very seriously, as many say that this was the role of his life. However, he had claimed a small role in the classic 1954 movie White Christmas, in which he played a TV host who helped Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye honour their old general. Also, he hosted the 1940s game show Stop the Clock, while he was a tireless organizer of entertainment shows for the US troops in Vietnam and Korea. The ever smiling mayor received his own star on the Walk of Fame in 1987 in between Zsa Zsa Gabor's and bandleader Glenn Miller's.In his honour, flowers will be laid on his star on the Walk of Fame, while his ashes will be buried at the renowned Hollywood sign overlooking Los Angeles, according to his wish, the Los Angeles Times reported.
